CONTEXT
Movemint is comprised of three components: A HIPPA compliant EMR platform for client management, A treatment plan portal for physical therapists to create treatment plans for patients, and a treatment tracker app that patients can use to monitor their improvement and accountability over the course of their treatment plan. Design for this product took almost half of our 6-week window, meaning the actual build was completed in just over three weeks. This project involved more UX research than some of my previous projects, and I spent much more time building the different experiences for our users.
The original intention was to give potential clients a simple, visual onboarding graphic. This was a little too vague, and while it collected less personal data, did not help the therapists prepare for the consultation.
Like many of my other projects, I learn so much from our users. The visual onboarding was not converting and our updated onboarding is a more performant and sophisticated solution to client onboarding.
CHALLENGES
This was my first time operating within the HIPPA compliance space; I encountered numerous unexpected hurdles regarding development. We were designing a seamless experience for PTs and their clients, but we couldn't build freely outside of a HIPPA compliant framework. This meant we had to get creative with how we designed the client component - how we sent/stored their data, how their progress was tracked, etc. We frequently caught ourselves trying to over-engineer the product when we should have been leveraging existing HIPPA compliant EMRs.
We used a third party EMR, and at first I was hesitant. I felt limited by their white label design tools and didn't know if we could create our own experience. As it happened, that component of the product was far less important to identifying product-market fit. The accompanying app was the real value add.
I built the entire workout app within Bubble and still maintained anonymity with clients. This meant no personal information (names, addresses, etc). Instead, the plans had unique IDs that corresponded with specific patients and their respective ailments (lower back, ankle, etc). Providers can create, monitor and update plans for their patients. A small amount of friction for the providers is acceptable for launch. I wanted to prioritize the clients since they are the real paying users.
For clients, my focus was accountability and gamification. Movemint is a physical therapy practice first, but if we can get them to engage in a companion app for accountability, we may be able to hook them once we present their aggregate progress over time. I chose to make the client experience very basic to make it very simple to engage and check boxes, with simple iconography to showcase their progress.
LEARNINGS
Movemint was a different type of product that what I had built in the past. One of my faults was approaching it as if it was the same. Each founder has a different process and wants to be involved in different ways. The best designers are those who are able to be true to their process but understand and adapt to the needs of the customer, or in this case, the founder.
